Union Bullies Boy Scout for Dastardly Good Deed
"...once the city’s municipal union caught wind of this do-gooder breath of fresh air, it put up a stink at Tuesday’s city council meeting. Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Unions said its considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing such good, free-of-charge, work to happen.
"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council, reports The Morning Call."

My family is terrible at Christmas and I don’t think it’s just because most of them are Jewish. They put a lot of effort into the holiday. The tree goes up the weekend of Thanksgiving. The mantel is decked out to the nines. My dads love for frankincense and myrrh comes out in full force. We’ve been planning our Christmas eve dinner since June. I’ve been planning Christmas day brunch since before that. But something gets lost in the spirit.
But I don’t mean the “Christ our savior is born” spirit. As my dad puts it “We’re Jews for Christ sake!” my step mom is a lapsed Catholic, and my sister and I are of the non-believing variety. Our spirit is purely secular. We’re all about the family, giving, and togetherness thing. Like a second Thanksgiving but with presents. And a tree. And A cranky Grandma who wants to know where she went wrong with her nice Jewish son.
Awesome.

Thousands rally to protest health care bill
"This bill is the greatest threat to freedom that I have seen," House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio told the crowd gathered on the lawn near the West Front of the Capitol.
Said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa: "We're not going to leave this Hill until we kill this bill."
Among the signs in the crowd was one reading, "Waterboard Congress," and another saying, "Vote no to government-run health care." The crowd included a significant number of older Americans.
Some conservatives oppose increased government involvement as the first step on a slippery slope to "socialized" medicine, a term they use to denigrate other countries' health care systems, and insist on rugged American individualism, in which people should be responsible for their own health care.
Anyone, ANYONE! Who opposes a government run healthcare option should voluntarily forfeit their rights to Medicare/Medicaid! Where the fuck do they think those magic benefits come from? And if anyone has a problem with “Socialized” medicine I will gladly give them my mothers contact information in the United Kingdom and you are free to call her in her private hospital room where she is currently recovering from hip replacement surgery that she got at no out of pocket cost and that SHE WOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN IN THIS COUNTRY. She is 55 and unable to work due to her disabilities and would most likely be uninsurable. Without this surgery, and the ones she will be getting after it the rest of her life would have been lived out in excruciating pain even with medicine. So fuck you Steve King.

"A blogger writes about how one of Judaism's holiest days ended, for her, in a strip club, while elsewhere a guy strolls into a tattoo parlor requesting a Star of David. Two women exchange wedding vows in a Jewish ceremony, and hipsters toss back bottles of HE'BREW, The Chosen Beer. A full-time software developer prepares to lead a group in Jewish prayer, as a PhD candidate in Jewish thought pens a letter criticizing Israel's policies.
Meet the "New Jews," as some call them: pockets of post-baby boomers -- or more accurately Generation X and Millennial (Gen Y) Jews -- who are making one of the world's oldest known monotheistic faiths and its culture work for them and others in a time when, more than ever, affiliation is a choice."
I dont know how i feel about all this. I apreciate great marketing, and its nice to see people who have faith finding a way to connect wiht it, but i wonder how one can find the meening of the High Holy Days in a strip club (though it might be cheaper than goign to a Synagogue). I'm really only jewish in ethnicity/tradition only as i never had a religious upbringing. the High holy days, Passover and Chanukah were the only things celebrated in our house (along with christmas and easter, but when both you mom and your later step mom are shiksas thats a given) and we never went to Temple. More often than not i've found myself being the one holding the traditions in place. I don't like labling my religious (non)alignment but it's pretty funny when the

Dia De Los Muertos
This show will consist of 40+ pieces of art from the Autumn Society's finest artists, each interpreting "Dia de los Muertos" in their own unique style. "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead), is typically a Mexican celebrated holiday, in which families bring offerings (such as food and mementos) to remember and celebrate their loved ones that have passed away. Come out and celebrate tonight, October 2nd 2009, for some fantastic original artwork, and some sugar skulls!"

The Staffordshire Hoard Set on Flickr (over 600 photos)
This hoard is perhaps the most important collection of Anglo-Saxon objects found in England. It compares and perhaps exceeds those objects found at Sutton Hoo. Originally discovered by metal detectorist Terry Herbert in July 2009 and subsequently excavated by Birmingham University Archaeology Unit and Staffordshire County Council.
Leslie Webster, former Keeper of Prehistory and Europe at the British Museum describes this discovery as:
"...this is going to alter our perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England in the seventh and early eighth century as radically, if not moreso, as the 1939 Sutton Hoo discoveries did; it will make historians and literary scholars review what their sources tell us, and archaeologists and art-historians rethink the chronology of metalwork and manuscripts; and it will make us all think again about rising (and failing) kingdoms and the expression of regional identities in this period, the complicated transition from paganism to Christianity, the conduct of battle and the nature of fine metalwork production - to name only a few of the many huge issues it raises. Absolutely the metalwork equivalent of finding a new Lindisfarne Gospels or Book of Kells."
The images contained in this set invite comment. We accept there may be some errors with labelling as this was done in a very short space of time. If you do use these images please attribute as used courtesy of the Staffordshire hoard website.
For more information:
www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk and www.finds.org.uk The entire hoard will be catalogued on our database in due course and made available to the public.

I’ve seen a few moves in the past two weeks, not all in theaters.
9
“The Brave Little Toaster” meets “The Matrix”. Make of that what you will. Beautiful world but the plot was all fluff. It made me want to sew stuff, but no sequel please.
District 9
Wonderful. You could strip all the nifty “sci-fi” stuff away from this film and still have an amazing movie. The aliens and spaceships were just really tasty cat food icing. I hope they do a “District 10”
Out for a while on dvd
Doubt
Beautifully done and wonderfully acted, but something got lost in the story. The moral lesson got lost in the films effort to teach you the moral lesson. You’re left with doubts at the end as you should be but more as to whether you just watched a good film or not.
What Dreams May Come
I wouldn’t have appreciated this if I had seen it sooner. I cried throughout the entire movie. Stunning. Don’t bother watching the alternate ending.
Idiocracy
Wow. I’ve really got to start getting on that whole having children thing…

In regards to yesterdays post
I now know why there is such uproar at the influx of female fans due to the twilight phenomenon when most other female centric fandoms have been ignored.

In one panel, filmmaker/comic shop owner Kevin Smith mentioned "Twilight," and his throngs of fans responded with such loud boos and jeers that Smith chastised them.
"That's the next generation of fans!" Smith said. "That's what I love about a comic book convention. People will come to a convention, stand there in a Spock costume, look at someone in a Chewie costume, and say, 'Look at that f__in' geek. How dare you pass judgment on those 12-year-old girls who like vampires!"

I have a universe in my head.
It's been there for quite some time. Over 10 years at this point.
they've got a culture, and customs, and religion, and a language. Costumes, and fables, and wars, and hopes, and fears.
I used to explore daily. I haven't touched it in almost 6 years. They're on the brink of a civil war, waiting for what comes next.
I've got stacks of journals filled with notes and sketches.
I still think about it every day. When you've got a universe in your head it's hard to put aside. Often if you see me staring into space, that’s where I am. Imagining a new face, a street corner, a conversation, a betrayal.
I keep falling in and out of touch with my old partner in crime (hi russ if you're reading this). He's got a universe in his head too. I think he feeds his more though. More finished art, talks of a comic or a book. Though i think something with a ten thousand year old history must be more persistent. I miss playing with him. i know his has existed for longer, but i like to think of our creations as in some ways growing up together.
I need to make time for myself again. I need to feed my universe. i know there’s so much potential. A series of novels, a web comic, a game system (haha math). Something. I just need a little time and a whole lot of focus.
